Why glazing decides the noise result
Sound arrives as pressure, and pressure is stopped by mass and airtightness, neither of which a timber panel hung inside the reveal provides. A sealed unit with asymmetric pane thicknesses, or secondary glazing set on an isolated frame with a 100mm cavity, changes the measured decibel figure. A shutter changes how the room sounds, not how much gets in.
The frequency also matters. Tyre roar and bus engines sit low in the spectrum, which is exactly where soft furnishings do least. That is why a heavily curtained room on Wilderspool Causeway still hears the traffic while the same curtains kill a conversation from the next room.
Blocking the light properly
Most blackout failures are edge leaks, not fabric failures. Light comes round the sides of a recess-mounted roller and over the top. Fixing that means either a face-fit blind that overlaps the reveal generously, or a side-channel system that seals the edges.
Shutters with solid panels close tighter than louvred ones. Louvred panels always let a hairline of light through the blade overlap, which is fine for most people and unacceptable for shift workers.
What actually helps with noise
Sound gets in through the glazing and any air path around it. A heavy dressing absorbs some reflected sound inside the room and slightly dampens what comes through, so the room feels less harsh, but the transmission loss is modest.
If traffic noise is genuinely stopping sleep, secondary glazing or an acoustic glazing unit is the intervention that works. We would rather tell you that than take an order for shutters you will be disappointed by.
The combination most people end up with
A blackout roller in the recess for total darkness, with shutters face-fitted over it for privacy, daytime light control and the finished look. The roller handles nights, the shutters handle days, and neither compromises the other.
Shift workers and light sleepers
Daytime sleeping is the hardest case because the light is far stronger than a street lamp. That needs sealed edges, side channels or a well-overlapped face fit, and it is worth specifying it explicitly rather than hoping a standard blackout blind copes.

Do shutters block street lights?
Solid panels essentially do. Louvred panels leave a faint line at the blade overlap, which is usually fine unless you need full darkness, in which case pair them with a blackout blind.
Will shutters reduce traffic noise?
They dampen it slightly and change how the room sounds, but they are not acoustic insulation. Glazing is what determines how much noise gets in.
What is the best blackout setup for a shift worker?
A blackout fabric with sealed side channels, or a generously overlapped face-fit blind, so no light enters at the edges. Add shutters over the top for the daytime look and privacy.
Can I have a blind and shutter in the same recess?
Often yes if the reveal is deep. Where it is shallow we recess the blind and face-fit the shutter so they operate independently.
