Shutters for Unusual Window Shapes

Most window covering companies quote for rectangles and quietly decline the rest. Shapes are the work we take on most willingly: every panel is templated at your window and hand built to that template, whatever outline it happens to be.

Choose your shape

What makes a shape difficult, and what does not

The outline is rarely the hard part. What decides whether a shaped shutter works is reveal depth, whether the louvres in the shaped section need to move, and whether the opening is regular enough to be described by numbers or has to be scribed.

  • Depth governs everything. Below 45mm the louvres cannot clear the glass, and no template rescues that.
  • Movement in a curve or a rake needs hardwood and a curved track, and it roughly doubles the cost of that section.
  • Regularity decides the survey method. A true 30 degree apex can be measured. A settled Victorian arch has to be templated.

Why Cheshire throws up so much of this work

The housing mix on our patch is unusually varied. Victorian and Edwardian bays fill the terraces of Latchford, Stockton Heath and Padgate. Half moons sit over front doors on 1930s semis in Appleton and Bruche. Converted chapels and barns around Frodsham, Daresbury and Antrobus bring gothic points, oculus circles and full gable glazing. Newer estates at Chapelford and Saxon Park add apex feature windows over double height hallways.

We measure all of it with the same free home visit, and the same fitters who quoted come back to install.

What happens at a shape survey

Longer than a standard visit, usually an hour where a rectangle takes forty minutes. We take the template, check the reveal at its shallowest point, look at how the shaped section relates to any rectangular glazing below it, and discuss whether the shaped louvres are worth making operable in your particular room.

You leave with a written price, supplied and fitted, VAT included, and no obligation to proceed.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

Which window shapes can you actually shutter?

Bays of any angle, arches and half moons, gothic points, circles and portholes, apexes, gables, trapezoids, raked staircase windows, corner windows and off square reveals. If it can be templated on site, it can be built.

Is there a shape you turn down?

Two. A reveal with under 45mm of usable depth cannot carry a frame and louvres, and glass that curves in plan rather than elevation cannot take a flat panel. Everything else we will come and look at.

Why do other companies avoid shaped windows?

Because shape work cannot be ordered from a size chart. It needs a site template, a workshop willing to make one offs, and a fitter comfortable hanging a panel with no square reference edge. We do all three in house.

How much extra does a shaped window cost?

A fixed shaped section typically adds 30 to 60 per cent over the same area as a rectangle. A true radial tilting arch, where every louvre in the curve moves, roughly doubles that section.

Do shaped shutters take longer?

Yes, generally the top of our eight to ten week range, because the carcass is hand built to your template rather than cut from stock sizes.
