Bedroom shutters: how dark, how warm, and what to choose

The short answer

Shutters work well in bedrooms, but louvred panels on their own are not full blackout: a thin line of light always shows where the blades meet. If you sleep in daylight, choose solid panels or pair louvred shutters with a slim blackout blind behind them.

How dark a shutter really makes a bedroom

A louvred shutter controls light by angle rather than by fabric. Closed tight, the blades overlap and the room goes dim, but the hairline gaps at the blade edges and around the frame still glow on a bright summer morning. Most people find that perfectly restful. Light sleepers, babies and anyone on night shifts usually do not.

There are two honest fixes. Solid panels have no blades at all, so a closed shutter is one continuous board across the glass. Alternatively, keep the louvres you like the look of and add a blackout roller blind inside the reveal, behind the shutter. The blind does the darkness, the shutter does privacy and daytime light, and neither has to compromise.

Choosing a style for the way you use the room

Bedrooms are used at the extremes of the day, so we ask when the room is actually occupied before recommending a style.

  • Full-height with a split tilt: close the lower blades for privacy while the top half lets air and light in. The default for most bedrooms.
  • Tier-on-tier: the top and bottom panels open independently, useful on tall sash windows where you want to fold the top fully back.
  • Solid panels: the darkest shutter and the warmest, at the cost of daytime light when closed.
  • Café-style: rarely right upstairs, because the top of the window is left bare.

Warmth and noise

A closed shutter adds a still layer of air between the glass and the room. On a single-glazed sash or a cold north-facing window that is noticeable, and it is one reason bedroom shutters are popular in older houses. A tight frame matters more than the material here, which is why we survey and make every shutter to the opening rather than to a standard size.

Shutters also soften street noise a little, because a solid timber panel reflects sound better than fabric. They will not soundproof a room on a main road, and we would never claim they do, but on a quiet street the difference can take the edge off early traffic.

Safety in children's rooms

Shutters have no cords or chains, which is the main reason parents choose them for nurseries and children's bedrooms. The louvres are moved with a tilt rod or a hidden rear mechanism, and panels are hinged to the frame, so there is nothing hanging for a child to reach. If you add a blackout blind behind, ask for a cordless or motorised version so the whole window stays cord-free.

Material for a bedroom

Bedrooms are dry rooms, so the choice is about look and budget rather than moisture. Painted hardwood is light, stable over wide windows and takes a crisp finish. MDF is a lower-cost option that suits smaller, standard windows. Waterproof ABS is only worth considering if the bedroom has an en-suite that steams into it or a window prone to heavy condensation.

Colour is personal, but a colour matched to the skirting and door frames makes the shutter read as part of the room rather than something added to it. Our colours guide covers how to pick one that works in both morning and evening light.

Bedroom shutter questions

Are shutters good for bedrooms?

Yes, for privacy, ventilation and warmth. For full darkness choose solid panels or add a blackout blind behind louvred shutters.

Do bedroom shutters block all light?

Louvred shutters do not; a line of light shows where blades meet. Solid panels, or louvres with a blackout blind behind, get much closer to full darkness.

Are shutters safe in a child's bedroom?

They have no cords or chains, which is why many parents choose them. Any blind added behind should be cordless too.

How much are bedroom shutters?

Size, material and style set the final figure, which we confirm in writing after a free survey.
