Original sashes lose heat in two ways, through the glass, and through the gaps around the moving sash. Shutters help with one of those far more than the other. We would rather explain the difference before you order than have you expect a sealed window and get a warmer-feeling room instead.

Radiant chill versus air leakage
Most of what people call a draught beside an old window is radiant chill: your body losing heat to a cold pane a metre away. A closed shutter panel puts a second surface and a pocket of still air in between, and that alone changes how a room feels within minutes.
Actual moving air, the whistle around a rattling sash, is a joinery issue. Shutters slow it, but they are not gasketed and they do not seal a window. Brush seals or a sash overhaul deal with that properly.
Panel choices that trap more still air
Solid raised panels hold more still air than louvres, so a tier-on-tier arrangement with a solid lower tier gives you privacy and a better thermal buffer while the top stays operable for light.
Where you want the classic louvred look throughout, a tight louvre closure and a well-fitted frame do most of the work. Gaps at the frame edge undo it, which is why the measuring matters more than the product spec.
Measuring period reveals honestly
Old openings are rarely square. We measure at several heights and widths, record the out-of-square, and build the frame to the opening rather than trimming a standard box on the day. Where a reveal has moved significantly, an L-frame or a packed-out subframe closes the line without visible gaps.
If the sash itself is rotten or the cords have gone, we will tell you to sort that first. Fitting shutters over failing joinery just means taking them off again later.

The change people report is comfort at the seating position rather than a thermostat reading, being able to sit near the window in January instead of avoiding that side of the room. Closing panels at dusk and opening them in the morning is the routine that gets the benefit.
Common questions
Are shutters better than curtains for draughts?
Heavy interlined curtains trap slightly more still air, but they cover the window all evening and are awkward on sashes with deep cills. Shutters give you a repeatable, adjustable barrier that also gives daytime privacy, most people choose them for the combination rather than for heat alone.
Will shutters stop my sash rattling?
No. A rattle is the sash moving in its box, and that needs brush seals, staff bead adjustment or a joinery repair. Shutters muffle the noise but leave the cause.
Can you fit shutters if the window is out of square?
Yes, that is normal in period property. We measure the out-of-square during the survey and make the frame to suit, so the panels close on a true line even when the opening is not.
Should I fit shutters before or after sash repairs?
After. Repairs often change the reveal dimensions slightly, and any painting is far easier with the opening clear.
