Shutters fitted to a period property window

Costs

Are plantation shutters worth it, honestly?

The short answer

Short answer: yes for front bays, overlooked rooms, bathrooms, awkward shapes and anywhere you want the window to look finished. No, not really, for a spare room nobody uses, a rental between tenancies, or a window you plan to replace within a couple of years.

Where shutters clearly earn it

A front bay is the face of the house from inside and out, and a shutter is the only dressing that follows the shape of the bay properly. Overlooked rooms benefit because you can tilt for daylight without giving up privacy. Bathrooms benefit because waterproof shutters survive where fabric does not. Awkward shapes benefit because a shutter can be made to the shape while a blind cannot.

Where a blind is the smarter buy

Rooms you rarely enter, windows behind furniture, short-term rentals, and any window scheduled for replacement. Spending £450 on a window you are about to take out is not a saving we would recommend.

The things people say afterwards

The two comments we hear most are about how much warmer the room feels at the window in winter, and how much less the room needs curtains at all. The one regret we hear is choosing too small a louvre on a big window, which is easy to avoid at the survey stage.

Common questions

How long do shutters last?

A properly made and fitted shutter is expected to stay serviceable for the life of the window. Hinges and frames are the parts that ever need attention, and both are repairable.

Do shutters make a room dark?

Less than people expect. Louvres tilt to bring light in while blocking the sightline from outside, which is something a blind cannot do.

Are they worth it in a small room?

Often yes, because they sit inside the recess and take up no space at the sides, unlike curtains.

What if I only want one room?

That is completely normal, and usually the bay or the bathroom.
