Short answer

Dormer windows usually suit shutters well, because the deep reveal gives room for a recess-fitted frame, and angled-top dormers can be shuttered to a template. The catch is space: panels need room to swing open against sloping ceilings, so on very tight dormers a roller or Roman blind that lifts straight up is often better. In loft bathrooms use waterproof ABS.

What makes a dormer different

A dormer is a window set into the roof, usually with short cheeks either side and a sloping or low ceiling inside. The reveal is often deep, which is good news for recess fitting, but the space in front of the window can be tight, and the head can be angled on conversions. Each of those shapes the choice.

When shutters work

Where the dormer is deep enough and there is room for panels to open, shutters look excellent: the frame sits inside the reveal and the louvres give privacy and air in a bedroom under the eaves. Narrow panels folding back against the cheeks are the usual layout.

Angled or raked heads, common on loft conversions, can be shuttered to a template taken on survey, so the frame follows the slope. Our angled windows page explains how those shapes are made.

When a blind is the better choice

We recommend a blind when:

  • the ceiling slopes so close to the window that panels cannot swing open;
  • the budget is limited and there are several small dormers to cover;
  • you want full blackout in a loft bedroom, where a blackout roller blind in the recess is simplest.

Loft bathrooms and condensation

Loft bathrooms in dormer conversions are common, and warm, wet air rises into a small space where it meets a cold window. That is a hard environment for timber or MDF. We specify waterproof ABS shutters there, or a waterproof roller blind, both of which wipe dry. Our condensation guide covers ventilation steps that help as well.

Measuring and fitting

Dormers are rarely square, so we measure at several points, check how the reveal leans, and note any handle that projects. Recess fit keeps the covering tucked into the dormer; face fit is used when the reveal is shallow or uneven. Access in lofts is sometimes awkward, and our fitters plan for it.

Matching the rest of the room

A dormer is often the only window in a loft bedroom or bathroom, so it sets the tone of the room. Shutters painted to match the woodwork make a small window feel deliberate and built in. A roller or Roman blind in a light fabric keeps a low room feeling bigger, and it disappears almost completely when raised. If the loft has more than one dormer, matching the covering across all of them usually looks calmer than mixing styles, even where one window is harder to fit than the others.

Dormer window questions

Can you put shutters on dormer windows?

Yes, when the reveal is deep enough and panels have room to open. Angled dormer heads can be made to a template.

What blinds are best for dormer windows?

Roller or Roman blinds fitted in the recess, because they lift straight up without needing swing space.

What should I use in a loft bathroom dormer?

Waterproof ABS shutters or a waterproof roller blind, which cope with steam and wipe dry.

How much do dormer shutters cost?

Size, shape and material set the price; shaped or angled dormers are quoted after a survey.
