Why timber fails in wet rooms
Any laminated or cored panel has a joint somewhere. Steam finds it, water sits in it, the core expands and the surface lifts. Once that starts it cannot be reversed, only replaced.
ABS has no joint to find. It shrugs off the humidity cycle of a daily shower and comes back to the same dimensions every time.
How it looks next to painted timber
From across a room the two read almost identically, same louvre profile, same clean white. Up close, ABS has a slightly more uniform surface because it is moulded rather than sprayed. Some people prefer it; nobody notices from the doorway.

Practical limits
ABS comes in a narrower colour range than a painted timber, because it is moulded in colour rather than finished afterwards. Very large panels are also better in hardwood, which is stiffer over long spans.
For the size of window found in most bathrooms and en-suites, neither limit bites.

Cost against timber
ABS typically sits close to a mid-range painted timber for the small windows it suits, so the decision is rarely about price. It is about not having to redo the bathroom window in five years.
Common questions
Do ABS shutters look like plastic?
They read as a clean painted panel from normal viewing distance. The surface is more uniform than sprayed timber because it is moulded, which most people find looks crisp rather than plastic.
Can ABS be used in the whole house?
It can, but hardwood gives more colour and stain options and performs better on very large panels. Most customers use ABS where water is present and timber elsewhere.
Will they discolour over time?
The colour is through the material rather than a surface film, so there is no paint layer to yellow or chip.
Are ABS shutters cheaper?
They sit in a similar bracket to mid-range painted timber for the small openings they typically go into, so we recommend them on suitability rather than price.
