The short answer
Condensation is a room problem before it is a window-dressing problem, but the covering you choose decides whether that moisture quietly ruins a frame or simply wipes away. Timber swells, MDF cores blow at the edges, and fabric blinds hold damp against the reveal. On survey we look at where the water is forming and specify material accordingly rather than fitting the same product everywhere.

Why the covering gets blamed
Warm, moist air meets a cold pane and drops its water there. A blind or shutter slows the air movement across that glass, so the water sits longer. The dressing did not create the condensation, it changed how long the moisture lingers, which is why damage shows up on the covering first.
That distinction matters when you are choosing. A room with a persistent moisture load needs a product that tolerates repeated wetting, not a product that merely looks appropriate.
Which materials survive it
Waterproof ABS shutters are moulded, not laminated, so there is no core to swell and no veneer edge to lift. They wipe dry and go back to normal. Painted hardwood copes well in rooms with occasional moisture, provided the finish is intact and the panels are not sitting in standing water.
MDF-cored panels are the ones to avoid in wet rooms. Once water reaches the core through a screw hole or a chipped edge, the swelling is permanent.

What we change at survey
We check whether the reveal is deep enough for a recess fit that keeps panels clear of the glass, whether trickle vents are being blocked, and whether the existing frame already shows historic water damage that a new fitting will hide rather than solve.
Where the reveal is shallow, a face-fit frame moves the panel away from the wettest surface and lets air pass behind it. Small detail, large difference over a winter.
Habits that keep the problem down
Open the louvres or lift the blind fully for the first hour after a shower or a big cook, so the glass can clear. Wipe standing water from the cill rather than leaving it to soak into the frame joint. If a room routinely streams, extraction is the fix, no window covering will absorb that load indefinitely.
Common questions
Will shutters make my condensation worse?
They will not create moisture, but closed louvres slow the air moving over the glass, so water can sit for longer. Opening the louvres each morning clears it. In persistently wet rooms we specify waterproof ABS so the extra dwell time does no harm.
Can I fit real wood shutters in a bathroom?
In a well-ventilated bathroom with a window away from the shower spray, painted hardwood usually performs fine. Directly beside a shower or over a bath we recommend ABS instead, because repeated wetting eventually finds any break in the paint film.
What about blinds in a wet room?
Wipe-clean roller fabrics and aluminium venetians are the practical choices. Fabric Romans and unlined weaves hold damp against the reveal and can mark, so we steer away from them in rooms that mist regularly.
Do you check for damp during the survey?
We look at the reveal and frame condition and tell you what we see. We are shutter and blind fitters, not damp surveyors, if something looks structural we will say so rather than cover it up with new panels.
