The short answer

The best kitchen blinds are ones you can wipe: a waterproof or wipe-clean roller blind, or a faux-wood venetian, both of which shrug off steam and splashes. Keep soft fabric such as Roman blinds away from the hob and sink, and choose a blind that sits inside the recess, behind the tap.

What a kitchen does to a blind

Kitchens combine heat, steam and airborne grease, often right next to the window. Over time that film settles on everything, and on fabric it becomes a sticky layer that holds dust and smells. The blinds that last are the ones you can clean with a damp cloth without damaging the finish.

The types that work

Match the blind to where the window is, not just how it looks.

  • Waterproof or wipe-clean roller: the most practical choice over a sink, simple to clean and neat when raised.
  • Faux-wood venetian: the look of timber without the risk of warping in steam; slats tilt for light and privacy.
  • Vertical: for a kitchen with sliding patio doors.
  • Roman: lovely in a dining area, but keep it well away from the hob.

The window over the sink

This is the hardest window in the house. You usually have to lean over a worktop and a tap to reach it, and it takes splashes daily. A blind fitted inside the recess sits behind the tap, so it does not catch it every time you lower it. A control on the side you can reach easily, rather than behind the tap, saves a lot of daily stretching.

Real wood is best avoided directly over a sink, because repeated wetting can warp slats. Faux-wood and wipe-clean rollers are made for exactly this job.

Near the hob

Anything close to a cooker should be easy to clean and should never be a loose fabric that can be pulled towards heat. If the only window is beside the hob, a roller blind kept raised during cooking, or a faux-wood venetian, is the sensible choice.

Blinds or shutters in a kitchen?

Shutters also work in kitchens, especially in waterproof ABS over a sink, and café-style keeps the top of the window clear. Our bathroom and kitchen shutters guide covers the shutter route in detail.

Cleaning and care

Wipe rollers and faux-wood slats with warm soapy water and a soft cloth every few weeks, before grease builds up. For venetians, close the slats flat and wipe one side, then tilt and do the other. Avoid harsh solvents, which can dull the finish.
