Where rollers win
On standard-sized windows a roller is the tidiest fabric option: one clean line, minimal stack, and the widest choice of fabrics from sheer solar screens to full blackout. They also sit happily behind shutters or curtains as a second layer.
They struggle on very wide openings, where the tube has to be large to avoid deflection, and on doors you walk through.
Where verticals win
Wide runs and sliding patio doors. Louvres draw to one side and rotate for light control, so you can walk through without lifting anything. In offices and older living rooms with big picture windows they remain the practical answer.
They date more quickly in style terms than a roller, which is why many domestic customers move to a panel-track or a shutter on the same opening.

Cleaning and durability
Roller fabrics wipe or sponge clean and there is little to break. Vertical louvres can be removed and cleaned individually, but the plastic hooks and the chain at the base are the parts that fail with heavy use, especially where children and pets are involved.

Are vertical blinds outdated?
Stylistically they have fallen out of favour in living rooms, but on wide sliding doors and in commercial settings they still solve the problem better than anything at the same price.
Can you get blackout roller blinds for a large window?
Yes, though very wide rollers need a larger tube to stay straight. On extremely wide openings we would discuss splitting into two blinds.
