Start with how the door opens
The right blind for a glazed door depends on which way it opens and how often. Sliding patio doors suit vertical blinds or a single wide roller because nothing swings into the room. Bifolds suit perfect-fit blinds clipped to each leaf so they fold with the door. French doors that open inwards suit perfect-fit, pleated or slim rollers fixed to the door itself. The one question that settles it
Before fabric, before colour, ask: when this door is open, where does the blind go? A blind that hangs across the opening has to be drawn back every time someone goes into the garden. A blind fixed to the door leaf moves with it and never gets in the way. Once you answer that for your door, the shortlist writes itself.
Sliding patio doors
The classic answer is a vertical blind, and it remains a good one: the louvres tilt for privacy and light, the whole blind draws to one side like a curtain, and it copes with widths up to several metres on one track. Panel blinds are the same idea with wide flat fabric panels that slide behind one another, for a cleaner, more contemporary look. A single wide roller works if you only need to drop it at night and the door is not used after dark. Roman blinds are rarely right here because the stack blocks the top of the opening.
Bifold doors
Bifolds fold and stack, so anything hanging across the opening has to be cleared first. Perfect-fit blinds solve this. A slim frame clips into the glazing bead of each leaf with no screws, holding a pleated or roller fabric that folds away with the door. Because each leaf has its own blind, you can drop one and leave the rest open. The system needs a uPVC or aluminium bead deep enough to take the clip, which the survey confirms.
French doors
Inward-opening French doors need blinds on the door leaves themselves so the door can swing freely. Perfect-fit is again the neatest; a pleated blind on side tensioning wires or a slim roller with hold-down clips are the alternatives. Outward-opening French doors can take a normal recess or face-fixed blind above the opening, treated like a tall window.
Light, heat and privacy on big glass
Glazed doors are the largest single area of glass in most houses, so fabric choice matters more here than anywhere. A dim-out or blackout fabric on a bedroom's balcony doors makes a real difference to sleep. A solar-reflective roller or a light-coloured pleated on a south-facing door cuts glare and heat gain. For privacy at night, remember that verticals tilted closed still show movement; a roller or panel blind is more opaque.
Motorising a door blind
Wide, heavy blinds on patio doors are the best case for a motor. A battery-powered roller or a motorised vertical track removes the effort and the dangling controls, and the whole span moves at the touch of a remote. It adds cost per blind, and on a single wide roller it is usually worth it.
Door blind questions
Are vertical blinds old fashioned?
Fabrics have moved on a long way from the office look; there are textured, blackout and rigid PVC louvres now, and on a wide sliding door nothing else stacks so neatly. Panel blinds are the more contemporary alternative if the look worries you.
Do perfect-fit blinds damage the door?
No. The brackets slide into the gap between the glass and the bead without screws or adhesive, and the whole frame lifts out cleanly if you ever remove it.
Can I have shutters on patio doors instead?

How wide can one blind go?
Vertical tracks run to several metres. A single roller is limited by the fabric width and tube stiffness, usually around 2.5m to 3m before it needs splitting into two blinds.
Which fabric is best for a south-facing door?
A solar-reflective or light-coloured dim-out fabric cuts glare and heat while keeping the room usable. Blackout is for bedrooms; elsewhere it makes the room feel closed in during the day.
